Eau de ... WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?!

One of the first things I do with a new magazine is flip right to the new perfume/cologne ads. You know, the ones with the scent strips. I love pulling back the tab and taking a big whiff. As we all know not all smells are that nice but I long for the ones that are. Well, until I look down and see the prices.

When it comes to the pricing I do know that the Eau de Parfum is always the most expensive and the Eau de Toilette is only slighty cheaper. They both come in relatively small amounts. Sometimes there are also Eau de Cologne and Body Spray options as well and these are usually the cheapest if available. I don't, however, know what makes them different.

What is a fragrance anyway? It is a product composed of scent combinations dissolved in a combination of alcohol and water. The ration of essential fragrance to the solvent determines what category the product falls in. The higher the concentration the longer the aroma lasts.

Parfum/ Perfume
This is the most concentrated form af a fragrance. It is the longest lasting scent. The concentration of essential fragrance is between 15%-40%. A typical parfum contains 20%. This is also the most expensive version of fragrance. Parfum is applied directly to the skin on pulse points. Only a tiny amount is need which is reflected in the sizes in which it is sold.

Eau de Parfum
This is only slightly less potent than parfum. It has a concentration of 10%-20%, with 15% being typical. Since it is less intense that parfum it is also slightly cheaper. Still, it does have good lasting power and is sold in small sizes.

Eau de Toilette
The concentrates are between 5%-15%, with 10% being typical. It is designed for shorter wear on the skin. This will need to be reapplied throughout the day.

Eau de Cologne
Don't be fooled and think that cologne is just for men. The usually contain around 5% essence in them but they can range from 3%-8%. This is a lighter choice of fragrance. Usually it does contain some kind of citrus essential fragrance. Because it doesn't last long it can be reapplied frequently.

Just for a bit of fun I thought I'd share some of the fragrances currently occupying my wishlist.
Coach - Poppy

Viktor & Rolf - Flower Bomb

Jimmy Choo
